Workstation Assessments – What You need to Know...

What is a workstation assessment? Workstation assessments ensure a safe workspace setup for employees. Including looking at the keyboard, mouse, display screen, desk, chair, footrest and general working environment. Employers have a duty of care to their employees and must ensure a safe working environment. *The HSE website has an Office Risk Assessment Tool.

What is a DSE assessment? The DSE assessment is the same as the workstation assessment; the term 'DSE assessment' is an assessment of risks associated with using Display Screen Equipment (DSE) such as computers, laptops, tablets, and other display screens at work. It is essential for anyone who uses display screen equipment as part of their job. It is a process to identify risks that may affect employees' health.

When should DSE assessments be carried out? According to UK Government HSE guidelines, employers are responsible for their employees' health and safety wherever they work, including the home. Once assessed, your report will be presented to you or your employer/ HR department, outlining key recommendations.

Those recommendations may include adjustments to the employee's desks and chairs, purchasing a standing desk, lumbar chairs, laptop stands, split keyboards, etc.

How often should DSE desk assessments be carried out? Following your initial assessment, we will follow up - 1 month later - with each employee to ensure that they are working pain-free and that their setup works for them. If we identify any musculoskeletal injuries, we can quickly make internal referrals with our therapy team to help get your employees the needed treatment.

What is the difference between an in-office and remote desk assessment? We will schedule a remote desk assessment via a secure Zoom video call, typically taking 30 minutes. The assessment findings will be written as a report and sent to the employer and employee.

If you are unsure about your desk set up or struggling with common symptoms such as pain in your neck, back, wrists and shoulders contact us today!
